Kahe Chunar Mori – Archita Bhattacharya

Thumri is a genre of semi-classical Indian music that is romantic and devotional in nature, often focusing on a girl’s love for Krishna. The lyrics are usually written in dialects of Hindi called Brajbhasha, Avadhi, Khadi Boli, and Bhojpuri dialects. In this arrives the talented Archita Bhattacharya, who is even academically qualified in Hindustani Classical Music. The resultant “Kahe Chunar Mori” is a culmination as Archita’s performance – both as the singer and composer, with lyrics provided by Deepak Jeswal – excels in this lighter form of Thumri, Hori, which is generally characterized by taking flexibility with ragas. “Kahe Chunar Mori” has its own structure and content which cannot be defined strictly as classical or as folk, neither as sophisticated nor primitive in the usual sense, but remains essential hearing for listeners of thumris, nonetheless.
