Mann Bawra – Rimi Basu Sinha

Four tracks make up Rimi Basu Sinha’s current album, named ‘Mann Bawra’, which blends the very obvious Indian classical sounds – thanks to the singer’s training in vocals that began at six, and subsequent music academics in Allahabad – with western instrumentation [guitar, keyboards, and drums] that truly results in world music. All credit for it goes to Rimi, who has composed the tracks with Kislay Jha assisting on the lyrics. Synthesizing Indian classical, folk, and devotional sounds with electric instrumentation, Rimi demystifies the amalgamation of Indian and Western sounds through her mature songwriting skills and adept arrangements on most selections, although “Shyam Rang” sounds disjointed with a mismatch between the vocals and percussion [instruments]. However, that is the only aberration on ‘Mann Bawra’, as the other tracks are well fleshed-out – especially the more quiet, keyboard-laden ballad, “Thujse Lage”. Nevertheless, the common thread remains Rimi, who deserves immense credit for a unique stylised singing that is stunning, her commendable compositional talent, and the stellar sound that Rimi manages to promote on ‘Mann Bawra’.
