Baawari – Meghdhanush

There may be several artistes that broke grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream, but here is one band, the Ahmedabad-based Meghdhanush – consisting of Karan Patel [guitar/vocals], Jainam Modi [bass/vocals], and Dhaivat Jani [drums/vocals] – who attempt to take what they term “experimental rock” to a wider audience. With this Hindi-sung track, “Baawari”, the band succeeds with an appeal that certainly moves towards the universal although, on first hearing, “Baawari” sounds raw but, on constant listening, the trio’s sound owes its greatest debt to progressive rock with a heavy dose of Indian folk and classical influences incorporated within. Intricately arranged guitar textures, changing melodic progressions, and expansive harmonic vocabulary, completes the band’s overall sound. Though they may rock hard, Meghdhanush’s focus on love “through different perspectives of Society and various interpretations of longing to be…” undoubtedly contains earnest zeal, marking their greatest impact through passionate delivery. The lead voice has a highly distinctive timbre that perfectly fits the song’s warm, rich sound, and that is indeed part of the key in eventually making not only the sounds of “Baawari” accessible, but converting them into an impressively tight, focused form.
