Coke Studio Season 9 Episode 7

The ninth season of Pakistani music television series Coke Studio commenced airing in Pakistan on August 13, 2016, and concluded on September 24, 2016, and contained 7 episodes. Episode 7 featured six tracks, including “Sab Jag Soye” [Shuja Haider/Quratulain Balouch], “Tu Kuja Man Kuja” [Shiraz Uppal/Rafaqat Ali Khan], “Nimma” [Shani Arshad], “O Re” [Noori], “Dil Kamla” [Faakhir/Natasha Khan], and “Rang” [Amjad Sabri/Rahat Fateh Ali Khan].

While the season’s final and seventh episode was apparently the most awaited episode in Coke Studio history, probably because of singer Amjad Sabri’s final performance prior to his demise in June, a little over a month before series premiered. Amjad performed a qawwali, “Rang”, with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the same song that was sung by Sabri’s father, Ghulam Farid Sabri, and Rahat’s uncle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, some 42 years ago! No doubt, a brilliant track but, for me, the standout is the accordion-opening “O Re”, composed and performed by Noori, which effortlessly crosses from a bossa nova beat to direct pop track, and brims with nostalgia but, more importantly, is a tune that is uptempo, pleasant, refreshing, and addictive, featuring remarkable guitar playing by Ali Noor. A fine ending to another excellent season, as fans now eagerly look forward to what Season 10 brings…
