Sanu Ik Pal – Mame Khan

After witnessing Mame Khan’s brilliancy last year at the Mumbai Exhibition Centre’s ‘Paddy Fields’ concert, he continues to perform in a style that remains unique, pursuing a tradition introduced by his family over fifteen generations. Commencing his musical career in a small village named Satto, near Jaisalmer, Mame Khan’s energy and his vocal prowess owes much to his father and tutor, late Shri Rana Khan, as it transcends his repertoire consisting of folk and Sufi songs.

On ‘Sanu Ik Pal’, Mame Khan takes traditional lyrics from Punjabi and Rajasthani folk, and combines them with both his composing and singing talents. Superbly arranged by Amol Dangi, the instrumentation blends with the musical content to perfection, thanks to the musicians featured: Vikram Singh Chongtham [guitar]; Amol Dangi [keyboards, harmonium]; Robin Vassy [drums, percussion]; Nishad Ali Kawa [tabla]; and Sadam Langa [sarangi]. Also utilised is an instrument known as morsing – in Rajasthan, it is called a morchang – a wind percussion instrument that is effectively utilised on this track by Sharu Khan.

Not surprisingly, the lilting melody of ‘Sanu Ik Pal’ is both accessible and captivating and, as a listener, you really need not be a seeker of any musical genre to recognize the power of the sound for when his voice soars to the heavens as it were, and then returns down to earth, you are swept into another world…Mame Khan’s!

You & I – Alpha X Omega

8903244980881

The men behind Alpha X Omega are Tarush Anand and Lakshya Mahajan, who commenced their musical journey from their school days in New Delhi, and culminated it thereafter by producing their own music. On “You & I”, the duo receive assistance on vocals by Dylan Matthew, with a song replete with R&B, soul, and hip-hop, backed by changing tempos. While the instrumentation may be synthetic, it still remains outward-looking, refined, and bristly for an Indian effort, especially the phrasing bit that goes “t-t-t-tell me” in the obvious love song. Nevertheless, as much as “You & I” has commonality with releases of retro-progressive peers from the past, Alpha X Omega retain a rhythmic core that strikes deep. While on the surface, “You & I” appears to be an unassuming exercise in fusing black music innovations that span decades but then, through repetitive listening, Alpha X Omega’s positive musical intent becomes clear.

Sisterhood – Geetu Hinduja

geetu-hinduja-sisterhood

Recorded in celebration of Woman’s Day last year, “Sisterhood” receives a timely re-release in 2017 as it speaks about women bonding through camaraderie, nurturing, fostering, compassion, and empathy, not only towards each other, but to humanity too. Credit for this journey goes to vocalist/guitarist Geetu Hinduja, who has trained formally in Indian classical music and jazz, and has composed the acoustic-flavoured “Sisterhood” in conjunction with singer-songwriter Kelli Eagan from Boston, and guitarist Alisha Pais from Mumbai. Geetu’s supporting cast includes six other talented women who, besides Alisha, include: Vasuda Sharma [ukulele/vocals], Vivienne Pocha [vocals], Mynah Marie [accordion], Shubhangi Joshi [vocals], Naama Choonawala [drums], and Nandini Shankar [violin]. Credit to Vasuda for her musical arrangements that feature a fine display of violin playing and the usage of the virtually rendered obsolete accordion [barring those performers still passionate about Zydeco/Cajun music]. Indeed, even the musical side of “Sisterhood” is a revelation.
