Sha La La | Preety Bhalla featuring Ilana Segev

The most obvious collaboration which one can consider that brought Middle Eastern rhythms to a larger global audience was perhaps the success of musician Sting’s collaboration with Cheb Mami on “Desert Rose” in 2000. Inspired or otherwise, the legacy continues with a Mumbai-based singer who cuts across multiple languages, Preety Bhalla, initiating her own collaboration between two countries courtesy Israeli singer Ilana Segev on “Sha La La”. And, through this beat-driven, infectious track, provides an accessible introduction to world music by connecting one part of Asia to another. In balancing rhythms and addictive dance beats with Middle Eastern sounding instrumentation – courtesy music directors Desi Dreamers, with lyrics by Shaheen Iqbal – this song once again reiterates how singers have integrated different traditions into modern pop and, in turn, have made yet another effective musical statement for “Sha La La” land!
