Nida Fazli’s Suno Tum by Jazim Sharma

A concept album of sorts, ‘Suno Tum’ is the very first musical album based on poetry written by Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli, more popularly known as Nida Fazli, who passed away on 8th February 2016. As a prominent Hindi and Urdu poet, lyricist, and dialogue writer, Nidaji was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to literature. But before we move further, let us consider what makes a concept album? Although there is no simple answer, I believe that a concept album could be a collection of songs by an individual composer/lyricist or with a particular theme or with a certain sensibility. This album – containing 11 tracks – largely encompasses all these arguments on multiple levels and, simultaneously, supports Nidaji’s belief that the feel of a poet is similar to that of a painter or a musician and, coincidentally, all these arts have been made to fall within the purview of the ‘Sonu Tum’ project.

The musical presentation of Nidaji’s poetry is supported by composer-singer Jazim Sharma along with vocalist Parul Mishra whereas, outside the realms of music, paintings based on selected works of Nidaji have been handled by Geeta Das. While some tracks contain a recitation of lyrics by Tom Alter, the singing on ‘Suno Tum’ is competent enough, as are the musical compositions, but the instrumentation – largely the programming – does get repetitive. Nevertheless, this constructive criticism should not take away from the tremendous efforts placed behind commemorating the eminence of the late Nida Fazli’s poetry.
