Run The Streets – Nasty Ninja

Desi hip-hop continues its legacy with Sumeet Suvarna, also known as Nasty Ninja and a co-founder of ‘Mumbai’s Finest’ in 2006, who goes solo on this effort with a song called “Run The Streets”. While the intent may be honourable, after all the artistic renaissance of Indian rap is often credited to its street musical roots but, unfortunately for the listener, producer Instine looks at an unconventional, non-musical model where there is virtually zero instrumentation with the focus being on rapping, and drum programming, which is at a counterpoint to fixed beats. While monotony may be considered a virtue to hip-hop fans, for a reviewer like me who is admittedly not street hip-hop smart, the repetitive “I run the streets” narration is certainly jarring. But, no doubt, there is still a market for the likes of Nasty Ninja even though, as a listener, you may need to walk through this musical mash before you “Run The Streets”.
