Shivoham – Kailash Kher

Some artists have achieved such a fine reputation in their career that it enables them to pursue their musical passion in whichever direction that they may choose, and they still continue to enhance their reputation. India’s world music expert, Kailash Kher, is one of them as he has earned a standing in music circles as an exponent of pop-rock, folk music, and Sufi, among other genres. The multi-faceted singer is equally adept at singing in multiple languages too. In recognition of his talent, Kailash was awarded the Padma Shri, as he continues to pursue making music with a difference.

This time around, he has focused on the devotional side of things, by launching a tribute album to Lord Shiva, consisting of 7 Sanskrit shlokas, called ‘Shivoham’. In support, Kailash has obtained backing from a pool of vocal talent – a virtual who’s who, as it were – that includes Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghoshal, and Suresh Wadkar, among others. But in this spirited venture of his, Kailash has not ignored new talent, providing Sreekant Krishnamurthy an opportunity of singing “Shankar Mahadev Dev”, a song that imagines Lord Shiva performing his divine dance of Tandav. Nonetheless, the highlight of ‘Shivoham’ is undoubted “Karpurgauram” for which Kailash has collaborated with one of India’s most popular actors, Amitabh Bachchan, who lends his powerful voice to it.

As the musical director of “Shivoham”, Kailash still generates all his trademarks of a distinctive, powerful voice, along with his unique style of musical arrangements in [t]his effort to redefine devotional music.
