Lagan Lagi – Anaya Brahma

LaganLagi-Anaya-AA

Originally from North East Assam, Anaya Brahma eventually graduated in music from Mumbai’s SNDT University, training herself in classical music under the tutelage of Begum Parveen Sultana and Pushpa Ranjan De. Her musical background is efficiently showcased on this composition by Vijay Verma with lyrics by Manthan. “Lagan Lagi” features modern day sounds supported by fabulous rock guitaring as Anaya’s powerful voice sums the best parts of her musical character and transforms her from a one-time student to a potential teacher.

Raanjhana – Shirin

Raanjhanaa-Shirin-AA

From Yavatmal, vocalist Shirin Nazim Charania is fortunately a late bloomer, considering that her bio speaks of her breaking out from “13 years of marriage and family life” to make singing into her career and, despite a delayed start to her career, Shirin has gone head on into picking songs that suit her precise voice. So too on “Raanjhana” – with lyrics and tune composed by Sargam Jashu – wherein Shirin has been provided a melodious song pervaded by keyboards with appropriate support provided by guitar in select passages. Certainly, “Raanjhana” is a song that is pleasing to the ears and maintains Shirin’s track for selecting soothing melodies.

Jaane Kab Fir – Piyush Gupta featuring Ankit Jain

JaaneKabFir-PiyushGupta-AA

U.P.-based Piyush Gupta is a music director who has composed the music, written the lyrics, and produced yet another catchy song this time around too, called “Jaane Kab Fir”. The mid-tempo keyboard-based track speaks about “when love is in the soul, music is the only solace” with vocals provided by Ankit Jain. This is uncluttered pop requiring no deep thinking for enjoyment and, even though it may be considered a light weight song, nothing changes the fact that it remains pleasing to the ears.

Dil Khush – Vintage Cassette

VintageCassets-DilKhush-AA

Formed in 2014, Vintage Cassette is a quintet of musicians consisting of vocalists Charles Charley [lead] and Arlin Clitus [backing], and instrumentalists Aman Chourasia [lead guitar], Sanchay Cholkar [bass], and “Dil Khush” composer/lyricist Parag Agrawal on rhythm guitar. They attempt to broaden their acoustic-flavoured rock by stylistic experimentation on this uptempo track. The resulting song is also successful for marrying the group’s dual vocalists’ sweet harmonies to rock melody, further spicing things up by throwing in the surprising mid-section consisting of whistling. “Dil Khush” is undoubtedly a gritty pacey rocker that effectively pits a marvellous performance from Vintage Cassette with sweeping music capabilities to create a convincing tale of life through a b[r]and of [H]indi[e] rock!

Disco Stud – Shahid Mallya Ft. Rishabh Jain

DiscoStud-AA

Hailing from Punjab, brought up in the northern-most part of Rajasthan, Sri Ganganagar, and bred in Mumbai from 2002 onwards, playback singer Shahid Mallya sings mostly in Hindi and Punjabi, a domain that he has gained expertise in, and stuck to, on “Disco Stud”. Credit to the faster than a bullet speed of the beats goes to music composers Apoorva and Aarif Sheikh, who have apparently contracted the neo-electro, indie-dance fever that expectedly remains thin on instrumentation [and even thinner on the lyrics of Gopi Sidhu] as keyboards do the “talking” while Shahid sings, as both forms of “communication” receive a surprise rap from Aarif [pun intended!], in a song that conjures up the flavour of the decade, as it were, in the omnipresent and contagious sounds of EDM.

Mann Bawra – Rimi Basu Sinha

RimiBasuSinha-AA

Four tracks make up Rimi Basu Sinha’s current album, named ‘Mann Bawra’, which blends the very obvious Indian classical sounds – thanks to the singer’s training in vocals that began at six, and subsequent music academics in Allahabad – with western instrumentation [guitar, keyboards, and drums] that truly results in world music. All credit for it goes to Rimi, who has composed the tracks with Kislay Jha assisting on the lyrics. Synthesizing Indian classical, folk, and devotional sounds with electric instrumentation, Rimi demystifies the amalgamation of Indian and Western sounds through her mature songwriting skills and adept arrangements on most selections, although “Shyam Rang” sounds disjointed with a mismatch between the vocals and percussion [instruments]. However, that is the only aberration on ‘Mann Bawra’, as the other tracks are well fleshed-out – especially the more quiet, keyboard-laden ballad, “Thujse Lage”. Nevertheless, the common thread remains Rimi, who deserves immense credit for a unique stylised singing that is stunning, her commendable compositional talent, and the stellar sound that Rimi manages to promote on ‘Mann Bawra’.
