Where Did We Go Wrong? – Babu Choudhary featuring Vijay Prakash

While tracing the Indian history of rock ‘n’ roll, one name that is a certainty is Babu Choudhary, who started playing guitar in 1978 with ‘People’, a Mumbai-based rock band that featured musicians such as Ronnie Desai, Ranjit Barot, and Hosi Nanji, which became very popular in the college circuit then. For some intriguing reason, Babu stopped playing guitar for ten years thereafter but, fortunately for music listeners, he got back into playing in 2007 and has recently produced his first ever album, ‘Somewhere Out There’. “Where Did We Go Wrong?” is the appetiser with Babu’s innovative guitar style making it mandatory primer for younger guitarists, with its soothing chord progressions and usage of harmonic scales, supported by vocalist Vijay Prakash’s alaaps. “Where Did We Go Wrong?” is a haunting melody that goes to show how much Babu was missed during his self-imposed hibernation and, hopefully, there is no more slumbering before his next album. Welcome back, Babu!

Feathers From The West – Chaitanya Kolluri

Sensitively woven tranquil textures of sound wash through the mind of the listener on “Feathers From The West” that arrives from self-taught keyboardist/pianist/programmer Chaitanya Kolluri who admits to having started off his career as a lobby pianist. The instrumental, backed by changing tempos, includes multi-layered sounds of synthesisers, piano, and guitar, among other “instruments”. However, the best aspect of this track is the passage that only contains bass with percussion, creating atmospheres of light, airy and, paradoxically, lyrical. The gentle melody is supported by soundscapes that are dynamic and bold and will surely appeal to fans of the synth sounds from the Seventies.

Everything – Dorjee

From playing bass in heavy metal bands in England to taking a tangent towards the indie music scene over there, Dorjee has returned to Indian shores to showcase his talent on an EP known as ‘Glassful Of Smoke’, from which arrives this song under review, “Everything”.  It is a delicately textured acoustic ditty that could have easily arrived from the ’60s and, at the same time, it is ambitious, bold, and quietly reassuring. It is personal yet soothing and, at other times, it just plain fun as the track features the “greyness of decisions”. Having played his last gig in Goa during June 2015, Dorjee would surely be an artiste of the future if his live performances match the standard of craftsmanship on “Everything”.

Collage Album – Vijay Durbha

Vijay Durbha may be a one-man band but, on his first digital ‘Collage Album’, he utilises a stellar cast of singers for support: Kalpana Patowary, Karsan Sagathiya, KS Chitra, OP Rathore, Mahalaxmi Iyer, and Mohit Chauhan.  He focuses on their respective vocal talents through the gamut of various genres on this album: pop [Janana], dance [Boondon Ki Baraat], mainly instrumental [Mood Of The Monsoon, Togetherness], folk [Mera Dildar], devotional [Saraswati Invocation], a combination of new age with spoken words [Patjhad Ka Sapna, which also appears as an instrumental], and even jazz [Haseen Shaam]. All this is supported by what is now becoming Vijay’s musical style: a full dynamic sound overflowing with the power and passion of his musical influence[s], mixing intense rhythms and virtual grand-scale orchestrations with a flair for varied melodies, and poignant lyricism, courtesy his mother, who goes by the pen name of Swahili, on eight of the nine tracks! Vijay’s production is augmented by electronic instrumentation combined with the sounds of flute, sitar, santoor, violin, and what appears to be the ghattam, adding additional texture to Vijay’s compositions. This is a surprisingly pleasant album that retains an appropriate collage of warm feelings.

Aamchi Mumbai – Folk Masti

From Mumbai arrives a trio of musicians – Vipul Panchal [vocals, guitar, lyrics], Sachin Guldagde [keyboards], and Roshan Aade [percussion] – who go by the name of Folk Masti. The name of the band goes well with their sound that wonderfully wavers its beat and, with it, effectively broadens and quickly enlivens the song by abandoning the conventions of genre-rivalling ballads for a richly textured pop sound. While the lyrics speak about respecting hometown Mumbai and adapting to its [quick?] pace of life, special mention is required for the lively keyboard accompaniment that arrives and disappears to near perfection. “Aamchi Mumbai” is sprightly and appealing, much like the city itself!

Out Of Control – Oz

The Mumbai-born former Omkar Chikhalkar, who calls himself Oz, has now resurfaced as a solo artiste with a fresh musical identity and rap approach on “Out Of Control”. Getting help from hip hop new school producer Yantam and debuting a video on YouTube, Oz’s sound is lean, his rapping tough and fluid, and his subject matter – in a manner of saying – speaks for itself. The results seem to have worked well for this young rapper, who has sung, written the lyrics, and composed the music for “Out Of Control”, which is backed by the effective usage of keyboards, resulting in the musician becoming a kind of rap-synth wizard of Oz.

Vaada Karo – Prajoth D’Sa featuring Adil Nadaf

Prajoth D’Sa is an Udipi-born, Bangalore-based musician who lives a dual life shuffling between a profession [as a software engineer] and passion [music]. Although “Vaada Karo” has no distinctive style, it matters little on this song that is perfectly attuned to the essentials of pop sounds.  However, “Vaada Karo” still finds occasional flashes of ingenuity like the introduction of violin and the usage of flute that prove that Prajoth is a far more interesting musician when venturing outside a middle of the road comfort zone. Nevertheless, nothing changes the fact that “Vaada Karo” is a surprisingly enjoyable slice of organic pop.

Love To Hate You – Grey Area

Grey Area is a band based in Mumbai, consisting of Elton (bass), Sanchit (drums), Floyd (vocals, lead guitar), and Nestor (rhythm guitar). Apparently, the quartet’s music is inspired by first-hand experiences and, on “Love To Hate You”, Grey Area provide a hook-filled, smoothly strung simple rock song containing effective rhythm and lead guitar parts. Together, they provide energy to the song’s inherent grace and power of a constant shift between mid to quick tempos, offering up a hearty dose of the group’s obvious taste and, with it, injecting the indie movement with a shot of much-needed rock grit.

Ab Toh Jaag – Deepa Nair Rasiya

London-born singer-songwriter Deepa Nair Rasiya may have commenced her musical voyage with Carnatic traditions, but she has not ignored the North Indian side too and, with the blending of two music worlds [Western and Indian], results in the vocalist/composer conquering the world with this amazing track, “Ab Toh Jaag”, based on a poem written by legendary 17th century poet Bulleh Shah, who practised the Sufi tradition of Punjabi poetry.  The song radiates the confidence from master craftsman in sound engineering and production KJ Singh, who also doubles up in playing drums and bass. “Ab Toh Jaag” is a brilliantly constructed Sufi confection with top-flight support from Sanjoy Das [guitars], Partha Paul [keyboards], and Manas Kumar [violin]. Deepa’s turns on phrasing, along with her tight compositional skills, create a fresh sound and perspective all of her own, resulting in a classic platter buoyed by several moments of sheer brilliance.

Teri Meri Raah [Unplugged] – Vijayaa Shanker

There was a time when “unplugged” spawned a new sound and, with it, a new audience too. Then it went commercial to the extent that it began to be utilised by aging rockers to revive their glorious past by providing consumers old wine in new bottles. Unplugged was soon rendered passé. However, on this occasion, singer Vijayaa Shanker revives the “original” concept of ‘unplugged’, if one can call it such, by revisiting a song from her past, ‘Teri Meri Raah’, and going primarily acoustic with it. With the sounds of sarangi entering and exiting the track, as required, it merely provides further enhancement to the ballad composed by the incredibly talented Leslie Lewis who, as the music director too, knows precisely how best to support vocalist Vijayaa Shanker’s marvellous voice. Leslie’s production retains its usual sharpness, the instrument playing continues to bite, and Vijaaya’s vocals are deservedly up in the mix, sounding perfectly engaged. Certainly, with this rendition of ‘Teri Meri Raah’, “unplugged” is a welcome return to nostalgia!
