Lehra Tiranga – Hard Kaur featuring Bhaven Dhanak

hard-kaur-lehra-tiranga-flag-poster_1080p-0-00-23-19

All patriotic songs are motivational, bringing out emotions that often appear to be bottled inside, and so too it is with “Lehra Tiranga”, composed by the artiste born in Meerut as Taran Kaur Dhillon, but returning from Birmingham as Hard Kaur. After the obvious indulgence in Bollywood, it is a pleasant feeling to note [pun intended] that the artiste has not forgotten her nationalistic roots with lyrics provided by Sonny Ravan. From the keyboard/vocal opening to the introduction of percussion, “Lehra Tiranga” is certainly one of Hard Kaur’s better compositions with a richer scope. The end result is a paradox of a sombre theme but with vibrant arrangements that is sure to provide a wider appeal to listeners that go beyond Hard Kaur.

Gori Tore Nain – Aroon Bakshi

1400aroonbakshi

Film and television actor Aroon Bakshi, who has acted in over 100 Hindi films as well as in Punjabi and Bhojpuri cinema, has reportedly also sung 298 songs. Add one more with “Gore Tore Nain”, a romantic song composed, produced, and sung by Aroon. Having played the role of Mahant Dashrath Tripathi in the year-long TV serial ‘Ishq Ka Rang Safed’ that ended in August last year and apparently featured “Gore Tore Nain”, the song was found strong enough for Aroon to consider adding it to his ever increasing repertoire of songs. Although there is no credit to the musicians or arrangers accompanying Aroon on this track, the one certainty is that the instrumentalists excel and the arrangements are tight enough to ensure repeated listenings of “Gore Tore Nain” despite obvious limitations in Aroon Bakshi’s voice but, in all this, one cannot argue against the artiste’s enthusiasm of being a creative all-rounder.

Fagun Ahise Notun Ronge – Angshuman Pol Deka

angshuman1400

Based in Guwahati, multi-talented artiste Angshuman Pol Deka  has apparently been performing since age five, initially learning harmonium and tabla, before expectedly taking a journey into reality-based programmes such as ‘Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa’ and ‘The Voice’. However, Angshuman’s journey to find his true vocation continues with “Fagun Ahise Notun Ronge”, an Assamese romantic track, featuring lyrics co-authored by him with Barnali Chanda, and music provided by Rajib Hazarika. The result on “Fagun Ahise Notun Ronge” is pleasantly and inoffensively melodic, with welcome yet limited interludes from piano and from guitar on a softer and friendlier landscape that appears to augur just fine for Angshuman Pol Deka as he plays safe by remaining well within his comfort zone.

Sanu Ik Pal – Mame Khan

8903244978604

After witnessing Mame Khan’s brilliancy last year at the Mumbai Exhibition Centre’s ‘Paddy Fields’ concert, he continues to perform in a style that remains unique, pursuing a tradition introduced by his family over fifteen generations. Commencing his musical career in a small village named Satto, near Jaisalmer, Mame Khan’s energy and his vocal prowess owes much to his father and tutor, late Shri Rana Khan, as it transcends his repertoire consisting of folk and Sufi songs.

On ‘Sanu Ik Pal’, Mame Khan takes traditional lyrics from Punjabi and Rajasthani folk, and combines them with both his composing and singing talents. Superbly arranged by Amol Dangi, the instrumentation blends with the musical content to perfection, thanks to the musicians featured: Vikram Singh Chongtham [guitar]; Amol Dangi [keyboards, harmonium]; Robin Vassy [drums, percussion]; Nishad Ali Kawa [tabla]; and Sadam Langa [sarangi]. Also utilised is an instrument known as morsing – in Rajasthan, it is called a morchang – a wind percussion instrument that is effectively utilised on this track by Sharu Khan.

Not surprisingly, the lilting melody of ‘Sanu Ik Pal’ is both accessible and captivating and, as a listener, you really need not be a seeker of any musical genre to recognize the power of the sound for when his voice soars to the heavens as it were, and then returns down to earth, you are swept into another world…Mame Khan’s!

You & I – Alpha X Omega

8903244980881

The men behind Alpha X Omega are Tarush Anand and Lakshya Mahajan, who commenced their musical journey from their school days in New Delhi, and culminated it thereafter by producing their own music. On “You & I”, the duo receive assistance on vocals by Dylan Matthew, with a song replete with R&B, soul, and hip-hop, backed by changing tempos. While the instrumentation may be synthetic, it still remains outward-looking, refined, and bristly for an Indian effort, especially the phrasing bit that goes “t-t-t-tell me” in the obvious love song. Nevertheless, as much as “You & I” has commonality with releases of retro-progressive peers from the past, Alpha X Omega retain a rhythmic core that strikes deep. While on the surface, “You & I” appears to be an unassuming exercise in fusing black music innovations that span decades but then, through repetitive listening, Alpha X Omega’s positive musical intent becomes clear.

Sisterhood – Geetu Hinduja

geetu-hinduja-sisterhood

Recorded in celebration of Woman’s Day last year, “Sisterhood” receives a timely re-release in 2017 as it speaks about women bonding through camaraderie, nurturing, fostering, compassion, and empathy, not only towards each other, but to humanity too. Credit for this journey goes to vocalist/guitarist Geetu Hinduja, who has trained formally in Indian classical music and jazz, and has composed the acoustic-flavoured “Sisterhood” in conjunction with singer-songwriter Kelli Eagan from Boston, and guitarist Alisha Pais from Mumbai. Geetu’s supporting cast includes six other talented women who, besides Alisha, include: Vasuda Sharma [ukulele/vocals], Vivienne Pocha [vocals], Mynah Marie [accordion], Shubhangi Joshi [vocals], Naama Choonawala [drums], and Nandini Shankar [violin]. Credit to Vasuda for her musical arrangements that feature a fine display of violin playing and the usage of the virtually rendered obsolete accordion [barring those performers still passionate about Zydeco/Cajun music]. Indeed, even the musical side of “Sisterhood” is a revelation.

Maraz | Tariq

fb_img_1445977676276

Kolkata born, bred, and raised singer Tariq has developed a bonding with music since 11 and has been performing live since the past 16 years or so. On “Maraz”, he indulges in a romantic ballad on this keyboard-based track. Although Tariq’s bio speaks about his having indulged in various genres, on “Maraz”, he shows a penchant for melodic songs through his music, production and, of course, his rich, unique voice, with lyrics provided by renowned poet Munawwar Rana. It is very evident that Tariq is not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and, in fact, he appears as one of the few modern budding Hindi pop hopes to fully embrace affecting balladry and nuanced singing.

Paradise – Sam Systematic Seelan

paradise-41-aa

Tamilian Senbege Seelan, who arrives from Malaysia, promotes a social cause on “Paradise” and, in turn, showcases his diverse talent in moving from tight and punishing metal sounds to the soft with equal spirit. On “Paradise”, Seelan provides his own ode to the homeless, querying: “What we do when see homeless in the streets? What [do] we think of them? How can we relate to them?” Seelan’s knack for also spilling his guts in heart-breaking fashion certainly achieves a new high on “Paradise”, one of the most affecting ballads from the musician, who has composed the music and written its lyrics. The hooks and the heartbreak come together brilliantly on “Paradise” and reiterate Sam Systematic Seelan’s immense talent.

Tu Jo Mila – Sangeeta Khanna

tu-jo-mila-album-cover

Born to a musical family consisting of a father who was a music composer and a mother being a poet/lyricist, it was inevitable that Sangeeta Khanna would follow her parents’ passion. In pursuing formal music lessons from the Bhatkhande School Of Music, alongside her academics, Sangeeta’s studio debut occurred aged 12. Cut to the present and Sangeeta’s resume has expanded and how, covering Bollywood, ghazals, semi-classical, pop, Western, and fusion, with her latest effort being “Tu Jo Mila”, which contains slick sounds of cheery R&B on a mid-tempo ballad designed with a contemporary audience in mind, thanks to the musical composition from Sunjoy Bose, with lyrics penned by Vikas Chauhan. The track becomes enjoyable on repeated listenings, but nothing changes the fact that, although Sangeeta’s vocals may have scored in the East, the track had just the right amount of western feel it needed.

Durge Maata – Hema Sardesai

durgemata-aa

Following her last project, “Bappa Morya”, Mumbai-born, Goan-based Hema Sardesai indulges in more devotional content with “Durge Maata”. Even though the playback singer whose exceptional vocals on AR Rahman’s “Awaara Bhavaren”, from 1997’s ‘Sapnay’, catapulted her into Bollywood stardom, versatility remains her forte as she now adds more devotional content to the ever increasing list of genres that she excels in: Indipop, Indian classical, Western pop, folk, and fusion. With an intent of providing spirituality to youth through music, Hema continues her journey of utilising electronica to support devotional material, as on “Durge Maata” this time around, which has been also been written and produced by her. Devotional goes dancing again!
